Bringing people together #Circleofdrink

Mate is more than a drink. It is a symbol of unity, respect, generosity, hospitality, affection and gratitude. ~Josefina Achaval

Besides the obvious curiosity everyone has when they see someone drinking yerba mate from a gourd with a bombilla, there is a sense of wonder and amazement from your first sip.

In 1988, James F. Smith of the LA Times wrote, "Millions of aficionados are almost mystical in their devotion to a pungent South American beverage brewed from the leaves of a tree. Sipped alone, yerba mate offers solace. Shared among friends, it is a communal rite." It truly is a communal activity. One person in the group (the server) prepares the gourd, pours the water, takes the first sip to ready the drink. The server fills the gourd again and it is passed to the next companion. Each companion drinks the yerba mate completely before handing it back to the server to refill. And this process carries on.

Here are two great reads you may be interested in. The first is from Harvard University and the second is LA Times article I referenced earlier.
